YOGASANA CLASSES

The instruction of yogasana, as practiced at Shantarasa, is developed by Deborah (Sadhana) Pezet, based on her many years of training. Her practice was inspired and guided by the personal instruction she received from the great Siddha master Swami Muktananda, who was also an accomplished Hatha yogi with a profound understanding of the yogasana tradition. While residing in India for several years under Muktananda’s direct tutelage, Deborah also studied intensively with several other highly accomplished traditional Hatha yogis. This period of intensive training provided her with the heart of her teaching methodology.

The practice of yogasana (postural practice) is an integral and important component of the system for human evolution and transformation that yoga embodies. The practice of asana consists of methods that can help to awaken and refine our innate spiritual intelligence as well as creating vibrant physical wellbeing. The physical body is cleansed and strengthened through mindful posture. All the bodily systems are rejuvenated, with vital functions enhanced and diminished functions often reinvigorated.

We also learn to powerfully breathe into our bodies, expanding and nourishing our energetic quotient that translates into increased lucidity, calmness and psychological balance.

Students are encouraged to be honest and accepting of their bodies’ capacity to perform any of the practices taught rather than trying to achieve some ideal pose; it is through this honesty and acceptance that real opening occurs. The guidance of Shantarasa’s skilled teachers will help you identify your postural strengths and weakness, the postures best suited for the stage of life and health that is current for you, thereby bringing about a more well-rounded experience. As your regular engagement brings about balance, ongoing mentorship will guide you to the appropriate practice to assist your development of the deep awareness necessary to achieve the states of awakening and transformation yoga practice can illicit.

Through these practices every facet of everyday life can be enriched. We learn to cultivate life giving attitudes by bringing awareness to our motivations, feelings, thoughts and actions. The consistent and sincere engagement with yoga infuses life with meaning, power and grace.
