COMMUNITY YOGA

Over the last several years a broad based community has grown in relation to the activities emanating from Shantarasa, which, in turn, has given a new direction to the endeavours generated from this facility. As ones practice of yoga ripens the inevitable urge to be of service to the general community grows as a natural consequence of the internal state of joy that arises.

Recently the Shantarasa group of teachers and community participants have launched several projects which are contributing in real and beneficial ways. A highly original program entitled Peaceful Hearts Peaceful Hands is currently being introduced into schools in South Australia that is educating the educators and students into the enormous benefits that yoga training offers in improving the social environment in the classroom as well as providing a tremendous resource to teachers to counteract the impact of ongoing excessive stressor factors so evident in the education system.

Shantarasa instructors are also currently engaged in providing restorative yoga training in aged care facilities, offered at no cost, to residents and staff members. It is our firm conviction that there is no environment where yoga practice cannot be of significant benefit in enhancing real quality of life outcomes for participants of these innovative programs. We believe that the narrow parameters of how and where yoga has been taught in Western countries has been extremely limited and supports the shift of yoga instruction out of the yoga studios and gyms to include the homes, classrooms, workplaces and health services in the general community, so as to be able to reach its potential to favourably impact on society as a whole.

Shantarasa also supports the charitable activities of Shanti Mandir, a non for profit foundation established by Mahamadaleshwar Swami Nityananda, who is the spiritual mentor of Shantarasa School of Yoga. These projects include the health clinic, mobile hospital and eye surgery camps, the Sri Muktanand Mahavidya School for underprivileged youth, and Shanti Hastaka, which is an educational and skills training project serving over fifty poor rural villages in Gujarat, India. The Shanti Hastakala project is educating women to become peaceful agents for social change and improvement in their local environments by creating employment opportunities through the craft skills taught to these women villagers.

Shantarasa is grateful for the opportunity to participate in these life changing activities that are so favourably impacting on so many people.

Please contact us at Shantarasa if you also feel inspired to support any of these worthy projects. Find out how you too can ‘make a difference.’
