PRE & POST NATAL YOGA PRACTICE

Pre and post natal care is an area of specialised yoga practice. Shantarasa has specially trained teachers who care for women through the time of pregnancy, delivery and post delivery through regular classes and workshops. Workshops are offered that incorporate yoga and Ayurvedic practice to nourish body, mind and soul of mother and baby, with the additional assistance of trained midwives.

Women experience so much change throughout this time of creating and giving birth to life. Women’s bodies and psyches become so radically different throughout pregnancy and after, they can feel strange to themselves, disoriented and stressed. It is an important time to give conscious time to both oneself and the growing child to learn to move with and meet all that is changing.

Accompanying the massive physical changes and rhythms are the deep emotional and feeling based changes. A yoga practice designed to assist a woman to know, trust and understand the changing environment of her body and mind throughout this time makes the birthing experience far more pleasurable and conscious. Many of the difficulties that could arise may be averted by the kinds of deep awareness and relaxed attitudes yoga practice can yield. Physiologically women find the tendencies toward back, hip, shoulder and other joint problems are greatly relieved or eliminated. The disturbance to the digestive, hormonal, respiratory, circulatory, and lymphatic and nervous systems can be powerfully assisted and balanced. The radical swings and alterations in energy, emotions and thinking are profoundly assisted through the increased ability yoga practice brings to witness changes. Women find a centre within themselves from which to observe all that is unfolding that alleviates the tendency to be thrown off centre into emotional highs and lows, and the ability to recognise when you need time out. The need for additional calm, relaxation and peace as a woman’s body adapts and as precious life grows within is met through the attention given to breathing and relaxation throughout practice in class and that is encouraged as a practice outside of class whenever stress visits.

Yoga Practice prepares women to meet what ought to be completely natural to them, the growing of new life within them and through them and the nurturance of self and child after birth. Yoga practice helps a woman to align with her own natural rhythms, to work with the life giving power of her own body and to feel fully supported in the process. Post natal care is equally as important as pre natal care. An ever increasing number of women, because of the pressures within our modern world, experience a form of post natal depression. Yoga practice gives women resources to use effectively as they meet the challenges and joys of caring for the very small, dependent babes in their care. Women learn how to tend to their own energetic and emotional needs through this time by calling on the simple practices yoga offers.

Mother and baby are nourished by specialised yoga practice in a unique and life giving way.
